## How are the bells made?

The craft is known as the copper-coated iron bells of Kutch, made by Lohar artisan families; Nifa Overseas calls it the Rasaai process.

1. Forge: scrap iron or tin sheet is hammered into shape by hand, without welding.
2. Coat: the bell is wrapped in clay mixed with brass and copper powder.
3. Fire: a charcoal kiln melts the metal powder into the iron surface.
4. Finish: the clay is cracked off, leaving a golden-bronze covering that resists rust.
5. Tune: the artisan shapes each bell by ear.

The finish is fused in by fire, not painted, so it does not peel. Small differences in tone and colour are part of handmade work.
